Two in Three Google AI Overviews Quote YouTube, Reddit or Facebook. Here’s What a Local Business Should Post So AI Quotes It

By · Published: October 19, 2026 · 6 min read

Bottom line first: Social and community links showed up in 67.66% of Google AI Overviews in a new SE Ranking study of 100,000 keywords. They showed up in 32.39% of AI Mode answers and only 8.4% of ChatGPT answers. If your marketing stops at your website and Business Profile, you may be missing a source Google leans on. Four honest videos, a tidy Facebook Page and linked profiles are a realistic first month.

Most local businesses work on two places: the website and the Google Business Profile.

That still matters. But Google’s AI answers also pull from YouTube, Facebook and Reddit.

This post covers what the study found, what Google changed on October 15, and what a Toronto business can post this month.

Two in three AI Overviews carry a social link

67.66% of Google AI Overviews in the study included a social or community link.

SE Ranking looked at 100,000 keywords across a range of brand niches. It checked how often AI answers linked to social or community sources.

Google’s AI Overviews linked to social sources in about two of every three answers. AI Mode did it in about one in three. ChatGPT did it in fewer than one in ten.

Same question. Very different source habits.

Each AI engine reads social differently

The platforms differ too, so “post on social” is not one plan.

Three cards show the social platforms cited most: YouTube for Google AI Overviews, Facebook, YouTube and Reddit for Google AI Mode, and Reddit and LinkedIn for ChatGPT
Platforms the SE Ranking study found cited most, per engine, as reported by Social Media Today.
  • Google AI Overviews: YouTube was the most-cited social source.
  • Google AI Mode: Facebook, YouTube and Reddit were referenced most.
  • ChatGPT: Reddit and LinkedIn led, but each appeared in fewer than 1% of answers.

What does that mean for your posting time? If customers find you through Google, video and a healthy Facebook Page deserve more attention than a LinkedIn habit. If you sell to other businesses and care about ChatGPT, LinkedIn and Reddit matter, though the study found their reach there is small. Our comparison of ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews shows why the engines pick sources so differently.

Social work also feeds the wider craft of social search optimization: making posts easy for both people and machines to find.

What changed on October 15: Google names the creator

On October 15, Google announced updates to how AI Mode and AI Overviews show links. Here is what matters for a local business.

  • Creator names: Google is testing clickable creator and publisher names on video results in AI Mode.
  • Search profiles: Clicking a name can take the person to that creator’s Search profile.
  • Bigger link cards: Links at the end of answers get thumbnails and a more clickable design.

So who said it is becoming part of the answer. A video from a named owner on a consistent channel may read as a stronger source than an anonymous upload.

One caution. Coverage says Search profiles are currently available in the US, for creators with a sizable following. We have not confirmed when or whether they reach Canada, so treat this as a direction, not a feature you can switch on today. The same announcement also covers a test of an official sites box, which we explain in our guide to Google’s official sites section.

What AI is likely to quote: a real answer, not a big following

The study counted links. It did not test what makes a single post get quoted.

So this part is our working view, not a finding from the study:

  • Answer one real question. “How much does it cost to fix a leaking tap in Etobicoke?” beats “Our story”.
  • Be specific. Name the neighbourhood, the steps, the price range, the timing.
  • Say it in the video and write it down. Put the question in the title, add a clear description and captions so the words can be read.
  • Show who you are. Use the owner’s name and the business name, since creator names are now more visible.

Follower counts and viral Shorts are not what we would chase. A short clip with no answer in it gives AI nothing to lift.

The Toronto test: five questions, one hour

Before you post anything, find out what AI cites today.

  1. Write five questions. Use the way a customer would ask, like “best brunch in Leslieville” or “emergency plumber Etobicoke”.
  2. Ask each one in Google. Open the AI Overview, then try AI Mode.
  3. Note every social source. Write down the platform, the account name and what the video or post said.
  4. Mark the gaps. Which question has a social source from a competitor, and none from you?

Answers change between runs, so repeat each question a few times and look for the pattern. Keep a simple log of what you find.

How to earn community mentions without faking them

Reddit and Facebook groups are where real customers talk. In Toronto that often means r/askTO and local neighbourhood groups.

  • Answer questions you know. Help first. Mention your business only where it is relevant and the rules allow it.
  • Read each group’s rules. Many communities restrict promotion.
  • Make YouTube walkthroughs people can cite. A real video of how a job gets done is easy to refer to.
  • Ask happy customers to share their own experience. Do not script it for them.

Do not seed fake posts or sock-puppet accounts. They break community rules, and AI companies are cracking down. We explain where the line sits in our post on fake sources and AI search.

What the numbers do not tell you

  • A link is not a quote. The study measured how often a social link appeared, not how much it shaped the answer.
  • It covers brand niches, not just local. Toronto neighbourhood searches may behave differently.
  • These engines move fast. Citation habits change, so re-run your test every month.
  • We read the study through press coverage. We did not find the full SE Ranking report.

Your 30-day plan

Keep it small enough to finish.

Four-step 30 day plan: week 1 pick questions, week 2 post two videos, week 3 post two more and clean up Facebook, week 4 link your profiles
A simple four-week plan. Adjust the pace to your own schedule.
  1. Pick four customer questions (week 1). Use your Toronto test results and the questions customers ask you by phone.
  2. Film and post two answer videos (week 2). One question per video, with the question as the title. A good place to start is our guide to YouTube and video SEO.
  3. Film two more and clean up your Facebook Page (week 3). Fix the name, category, hours, address and phone number so they match your website.
  4. Link every profile from your site and Business Profile (week 4). Add your social links to your website footer and to your Business Profile where it allows.

Then run the Toronto test again and compare.

Google’s AI is already reading social. Give it something worth quoting.
